YouFibre vs BT, Sky, Virgin Media and others

This independent guide compares YouFibre against major UK broadband providers. It covers the key factors most people care about when switching: speed, technology, contract flexibility, and the referral reward available on YouFibre orders.

Prices change frequently. This page does not quote specific monthly prices because they vary by location, promotion, and time. Always check current pricing directly with each provider before making a decision.

The most important difference: network technology

Before comparing prices or speeds, it's worth understanding how the underlying technology differs — because it affects what you actually get.

YouFibre — full fibre (FTTP)

Fibre optic cable runs all the way from the exchange to your home. Speeds are consistent and don't degrade with distance. YouFibre's entry package starts at 150 Mbps and goes up to 8,000 Mbps (8 Gbps). Upload speeds are symmetrical or near-symmetrical on higher tiers.

BT, Sky, Plusnet — mostly FTTC or FTTP

BT, Sky, and Plusnet use the Openreach network. Many customers are still on FTTC (fibre to the cabinet), where the final connection is copper — meaning speeds vary significantly by distance. Full-fibre (FTTP) is available in many areas but not everywhere.

Virgin Media — cable (HFC)

Virgin Media uses its own cable network. Speeds are generally high, but cable is a shared medium — speeds can drop during peak times in your area. Virgin is not available everywhere.

Vodafone, TalkTalk — FTTC or FTTP via Openreach

Similar to BT and Sky in terms of infrastructure — they lease the Openreach network. Full-fibre availability depends on your location. FTTC speeds apply where FTTP isn't available.

If full-fibre is available at your address from YouFibre, it is a genuinely different product from FTTC — not just a faster version of the same thing.

YouFibre vs BT

BT is the most widely available broadband provider in the UK, with coverage via its Openreach network reaching nearly every address. YouFibre's coverage is more limited but expanding.

  • Speed: YouFibre's entry tier (150 Mbps) significantly outpaces most BT FTTC connections. BT does offer full-fibre (FTTP) in many areas, but availability varies. Where both offer FTTP, speeds are comparable at the low end.
  • Pricing: YouFibre is generally competitive with BT's full-fibre pricing, and often cheaper for equivalent speeds. BT prices frequently include phone line costs; YouFibre is broadband only.
  • Contracts: Both offer 24-month contracts. YouFibre's referral scheme requires a 12-month contract — BT does not have an equivalent new-customer referral reward.
  • Referral reward: YouFibre offers a cash reward for new customers using a referral code. BT does not have an equivalent scheme for new customers.

Summary: If YouFibre covers your postcode, its full-fibre service at 150 Mbps+ is a meaningful upgrade over BT FTTC. For equivalent full-fibre speeds, YouFibre is competitively priced and adds a referral cash reward that BT doesn't match.

YouFibre vs Sky

Sky bundles TV, broadband, and sometimes phone. If you're a Sky TV customer, the comparison is more complex — leaving Sky broadband may affect your TV deal.

  • Speed: Sky's standard FTTC (Superfast) delivers 36–59 Mbps — well below YouFibre's 150 Mbps entry tier. Sky does offer Ultrafast FTTP in more areas than it used to, but FTTC remains widespread. YouFibre is full-fibre only.
  • Pricing: Sky's headline broadband prices tend to be higher than YouFibre's for equivalent speeds. However, Sky often discounts for existing TV customers.
  • Bundles: Sky's main differentiator is its TV package. YouFibre is broadband only — no TV. If Sky Glass or Sky Q is important to you, factor this in.
  • Referral reward: YouFibre's referral scheme offers new customers a cash reward using code 7HZX5R. Sky does not have an equivalent new-customer reward.

Summary: For broadband-only customers, YouFibre offers higher speeds at competitive prices. For Sky TV subscribers, the decision is more complex — weigh the broadband saving against any impact on your TV package.

YouFibre vs Virgin Media

Virgin Media is the main alternative to full-fibre in areas where both are available. It offers high speeds via its cable network, but availability is limited to areas where Virgin's own infrastructure runs.

  • Speed: Virgin's M500 and Gig1 packages are comparable to YouFibre in download speed. However, Virgin's upload speeds are lower — particularly relevant for remote workers, video calls, and uploading large files.
  • Technology: Virgin uses HFC (hybrid fibre-coaxial) cable, which is a shared medium. YouFibre's FTTP is a dedicated connection to your property. In practice, both deliver good speeds most of the time, but FTTP is more consistent during peak hours.
  • Pricing: Virgin tends to be more expensive at the entry level but becomes competitive at higher speeds. Virgin often raises prices mid-contract.
  • Referral reward: YouFibre's referral code 7HZX5R provides a cash reward on qualifying orders. Virgin Media does not offer a comparable new-customer referral reward through an independent code scheme.

Summary: Where both are available, YouFibre's FTTP offers better upload speeds and more consistent performance than Virgin cable at similar price points. YouFibre's referral reward adds further value on the initial commitment.

YouFibre vs Vodafone, TalkTalk, and Plusnet

Vodafone, TalkTalk, and Plusnet all use the Openreach network, meaning their infrastructure is the same as BT's — speed and availability depend on what Openreach has built in your area.

  • Speed: On FTTC, these providers deliver similar speeds to BT — typically 35–65 Mbps. On FTTP (where available), speeds improve considerably. YouFibre is full-fibre only, starting at 150 Mbps.
  • Pricing: TalkTalk and Plusnet are typically budget options. Vodafone sits in the mid-range. YouFibre is generally competitive with Vodafone's FTTP pricing and faster for the money.
  • Referral reward: None of these providers offer an equivalent new-customer referral cash reward to YouFibre's scheme.

Summary: If you're currently on TalkTalk, Plusnet, or Vodafone FTTC and YouFibre covers your area, the speed upgrade alone is typically substantial. YouFibre's referral reward further reduces the effective first-year cost.

The YouFibre referral advantage

One factor that distinguishes YouFibre from most competitors when comparing total first-year cost is its referral scheme. New customers who use a referral code at checkout on a 12-month contract may receive a cash reward — paid to their bank account after the first bill is settled.

No equivalent new-customer scheme exists at BT, Sky, Virgin Media, Vodafone, TalkTalk, or Plusnet. Comparison sites do not factor this reward into their price comparisons, which means YouFibre's effective first-year cost is lower than headline prices suggest.
